On Books

So they always tell you to never judge a book by its cover, but I disagree. You can judge a book by its inside cover, especially if the summary ends with a question.

I know quite a few writers, and they usually write the summaries themselves, which is why it is so funny to read them. You get a taste of the style of the book, and see if they are humble, or want to brag a bit, which they completely deserve, for actually writing a book unlike the rest of us mere mortals.

Now, all inside covers that end with questions aren’t necessarily horrible, it depends on the quality of the question. Say you have a book that is a romantic type and the cover says something along the lines of: can she do the thing and get the guy, I’d say you should probably skip it. Unless you’re just looking for a standard plot with a clichéd ending. Its no big deal, those are fun occasionally, but quality writing in that genre is hard to find.

If it is a social commentary and ends with something that ties in to the book, you can probably bet its a satire and a quality read. AKA, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, or Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde (not kinky so far, I swear, but indeed a quality read).

The cheap mystery novels are my favorite to judge though. The ones with a male lead normally have him being an ex cop with an attitude. The question would be something like: Will the murder shake the city or will Mystery Solver save the day?
Female detective novels are usually of two strains, either a journalist or wannabe cop thrust into a private eye role or an ordinary woman who gets wrapped up in some risky business at the wrong time. She usually ends up with a man, because writers are super in to adding romance to widen the demographic of the book. No big deal.

With all the literature available in today’s day and age, you need to be a little discerning if you ever want to leave the library again, so think about reading inside covers, you’ll discover things you never knew, and maybe never wanted to know.
